Quarter 3

BRAVE NEW WORLD ANIMOTO

Ethics In Brave New World

In "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley, we see a futuristic view of London from Huxley's mind. He sees the world of the future being very predictable, a time of babies hatching with set futures, drug induced happiness, and predetermined, and unchangeable social class. Huxley's view of the world of the future seems to be a utopia with a lot of limitations, meaning that the extent to which each person lives, and can live, is very limited. The 3 ethical issues that are most seen in the book, are the way people are created, social class structure, and drug- induced emotions.  Today as always, children are born from sexual reproduction, which I will not go in depth with. In "Brave New world," babies are now born from hatcheries, where their future is already decided for them. In terms of ethics, this is a big issue, ethics is defined as "moral principles that govern a person's behavior or the conducting of an activity." Children being artificially made, is against all moral principles.

Everyone remembers that summer of love, in the 60's when everyone was perked up on LSD, Marijuana, and every other drug existent to man kind. Well, in "Brave New World," there is a drug called soma, and its main purpose is to upkeep the happiness of society, because in that period of time, all forms of sadness is frowned upon. In our modern day society, all though the use of drugs has become more of a norm, using drugs for anything but medical reasons is still looked down upon, ethically using drugs for happiness is against our moral principles.

Another ethical issue in the book is everyone having a predetermined, and unchangeable future based on the social classing system. A common belief all people share in this society, is that everyone has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Where the ethical issue arises, is that there is no life, liberty or pursuit of happiness in this novel , everyone is given genetics based on where they will fit into society, whether they are an alpha, beta, gamma, etc. When you remove such a fundamental right from everyone in a society, that is where ethical issues will arise.

REFECTION

Forth Quarter felt like it would never end. Even though I'm glad its over I really enjoyed the topics covered this quarter. I loved learning about different people views and how they have impacted the world as we know today. Through the struggling battle of third quarter I really enjoyed myself. My grade could have been better. If i had applied myself better I would have achieved a more productive grade. I am ready to move on from third quarter and become better during 4th quarter.
